Hey Kat,

It is possible to make a Approach-Avoidance Task in Inquisit. If this is the right program for you depends on how you want the program to work. If you really want to make a combination between the participant pushing a button or pushing/pulling a joystick, than that isn't possible (or I haven't found out yet how to do that). Too make it clear what I mean, this is what Inquisit does in my AAT:

Stimuli --> participant reacts --> picture becomes bigger/smaller

What you would want is:
Stimuli --> participant reacts --> picture becomes bigger/smaller depending on how far a participant is pushing/pulling

If you want the latter case, than maybe you should turn to more complex scripting or even programming languages (Python or maybe Authorware). If you would want the former, it is possible to make. I could even give you my script and see if you can alter it to the way you want it. Just let me know! If it isn't what you want, you can always see if there are other programs out there to help you. If you would like my script, it could take some time before I can put it online, since I might have to translate a few words from dutch to english.

Kind regards,

Ivor

Hi Ivor, thanks for the response, that is the type of task I am looking to make, I also want to create a AAT that shows a manikin figure moving towards/away from a picture instead of the picture getting bigger/smaller. Do you think this is possible too. I am only interested in the initial reaction time not the overall time it takes them to  move joystick so your script would really help. I have never used inquisit before, i have used superlab and e-prime for my previous implicit tasks, so I know very little about where to even begin. It was recommended to me by a colleague who is dutch too. I would appreciate any guidance you could give me on where to begin even writing the script for the task or else send me on the script and I will try figure it out.

Do you know if I can play a movie of the manikin moving?

thanks  again

Hey Kat,

Currently, I'm a little busy, so I don't know when I can send you a script for the AAT. Expect it this weekend. Unless you have a deadline before that, I'll see if I can make some time.
Yesterday, I talked to my superior about giving you this test. He didn't have anything against it, but he would like to know what you're going to use it for. It's just interest from his side. If it's not to much trouble, you could email him at nospam_m.vanleeuwen@bsi.ru.nl and tell him what you're going to use the test for. I've made the test for him, so if I'm going to give it to you, he would like some information. You could also tell me on the forum, so I can relay the information too him.

About the movie: do you want to use the movie in the AAT? If so, it's going to be a real pain in the ass if you wanna program that. In theory it's possible, you would have to divide the movie in different parts... so if you have a lot of time on your hands, it possible... but I wouldn't recommend it.

You'll hear from me soon!

Kind regards,

Ivor

Hi Ivor,

i see this thread is already 3 years old, but i will still try:

i am looking for the AAT version you described having. I want the stimulus/picture to get bigger or smaller depending on the participants' response (one click). I will not use a joystick but a response box (two buttons), so i guess it will be similar to a keyboard input.

Would it be possible to access your script?

Many thanks in advance

Dear Jule,

Sadly enough, I cannot find the script anymore. Like you said, the thread is 3 years old and it's been quite some time since I used Inquisit. The link Dave sent will probably help you more at this point.
