    problems with web version

    hi

i got some troubles with the inquisit web version. (3.0.2.0). after some tests with firefox (3.01.)  and internet-explorer (both german version) i made the experience that its not working with firefox (neither with the mozilla plugin nor with javawebstart). with the explorer, it only works after downloading the activeX plugin. but also not when using javawebstart.

when generating my launch html page, i turned on all four opportunities (activeX, clickonce, MozillaPlugin, javawebstart)

after installing the MozillaPlugin, i even cant start firefox again. it crashs every time. had to start it in secure mode to deactivate the plugin.. ?!?

    any ideas?

    thank you

    Re: problems with web version

    Dear Greg,

I have similar problems with the web version. Unfortunately I have no solution to offer. I switched to the web version 3.0.3.0, but there are still some participants that cannot open the experiment.

Is it a German characteristic, that German participants are very reluctant to install plug-ins and allow DirectX or ActiveX? Particiants who gave me feedback told me that the first impulse is to close a webside that starts to download things whithout being asked. Did you made some experiences here? It would be great if you could shortly tell me about your experiences with this issue.

Did you get any further with your experiment? Please let me know, I would be very interested!

    Have a great day,

my first problem - with the javaweb start is solved. it works now. i used a password for encryption with chars like "/". after changing the password it works.

yes. same feedbacks here. people are afraid of installing an activeX plugin. they believe that its something similar like a virus or a backdoor.  :-( we are thinking about programming a flash version of the IAT. flash runs on 98% of all computers connected to the internet. windows, os x and linux machines!

Did you get any further with your experiment? Please let me know, I would be very interested!

i got around 20 persons who made the experiment so far. now with working javaversion, its getting easier to recruit more probands.

    :-)

    Re: problems with web version

Not only a german problem ;). We've had serious problems in Sweden as well. The biggest problem is that even though we have convinced our participants that there is no problem installing the software, their settings, firewalls etc simply won't let them.

We had less problems with Inquist 2.x when we conducted studies in 2006. This is is strange since Inquisit 3.x should have many more alternatives for installning. However it seems as if security (in Sweden) has increased a lot in a few years. I practice, few if any of our participants have been able to install Inquisit 3.x with any of the new features because they have been blocked for some reason.

The problems with Inquist 2.x was quite straightforward. A computer either worked or did not depending on whether the user had the rights to install activex. These new install metohods have, in our experience, instead introduced a lot of other problems with weird crashes etc. In practice, this has irritated our participants to a much higher extent.

However, Inquist 3.x webversion still is great to use in a lab and is flexibile enough given that someone with moderate computer skills will set up the computers.

It is really sad that the makers of viruses etc have forced people to have such tight security that they cannot install leigitmate software even when they want to!
