How do I get my fixation cross to appear at the start of each trial, without having to write it into my stimulus times? I tried using the bgstim when I defined my blocks, but the "+" only appears at the beginning of the first trial and that's it. I want it to be in the center of the screen all the time until a stim appears.

Simple answer is: Not at all. You'll have to include your fixation cross in the /stimulustimes or /stimulusframes listings for each trial. Out of pure curiousity: Why are you so reluctant to do it like this? The /bgstim will not work because the fixation cross will be overwritten by the other stimuli appearing in the center of the screen.

I didnt want to have it as part of the stim times because I wanted the cross to be on the screen prior to the start of the trials rather than part of the actual trials, and I didnt want to have to mess with all my timings. I have set a pretrial signal which allows the participants to rest if they need to, and I wanted the cross on the screen even if they are taking a break.

If you attach your script to this thread, I'll take a look. Maybe the desired behavior can be achieved with some trickery. But I'd really need to see your script to decide.
