It appears that we are ready to run participants using the curent script, yet I would be greatly appreciative if you were to help us out as we are recording the data. Particularily, we wonder how to program Inquisit such that it records the item number as I specified (51, 52, 53 and so forth).  The idea is to have a unique number for each item and thereby create a new SPSS variable that would enable us to agregate efficiently the items that have equal valence, such as:

"if (number=401) aggvar=2"

"if (number=52) aggvar=2"

I noticed that Inquisit, when stimulusnumber is added to "columns", would record "embraced" as 1, complimented as 2 and so forth. Yet another list  is treated similarily, in that "exhausted" would also get an 1, and hence the problem!

Currently, stimulusnumber reports the ordinal number of the item. There isn't (yet) a way to give items names or custom numeric designations.

One solution would be to record the actual item itself using the "stimulusitem" column. In that case, "embraced" would be recorded as "embraced".

If that's not going to work, you could define a second stimulus item set for each item that contains a name of your choosing. You could then "present" these names on each trial so that they are not visible (e.g., present them offscreen or using the same color as the background), and link selection to the actual stimuli with the /select = current command. Then, you could specify the stimulusitem column twice, the first of which would record the actual item and the second of which would record it's designated group name.

It's a little bit roundabout, but it would work. Let me know if this isn't clear.

Just occurred to me there's a slightly better way to do this that takes advantage of some new counter features. Basically, you would define a counter who items are the name of the stimulus items, the configure selection to be the current stimulus items. For example, names for praiseneutraltarget1 items would be:

I also figured that I can easily make use of the "trialcode" predefined data column, such that I assigned a number to each trial, which is consequently displayed under the "trialcode" collumn.  For instance, if "trial 1" has 5 items, the data file will list 5 rows each displaying the value number "1". Next, I wrote the syntax as posted below, and  using the  "data" then "aggregate" SPSS comands, I was able to obtain the means for any items I wished. (I also posted the first block of my measure as additional reference)
