Inquisit 3 Web Edition Overview

Inquisit 3 Web Edition enables you to leverage all of the power and precision of Inquisit 3 over the web. With just a few mouse clicks, you can administer Inquisit experiments over your LAN or the Internet.

Advantages of Inquisit 3 Web Edition

Mass testing made easy. Inquisit 3 Web Edition allows you to collect data simultaneously from an unlimited number of participants, making it an ideal tool for mass testing in classrooms or over the Internet.

Easy web deployment. With Inquisit 3 Web Edition, participants launch your experiments directly from a web page with no cumberson setup programs or registration procedures. Inquisit 3 is packaged using several different web deployment technologies, and it automatically selects the technology best suited to run with the participant's browser and computer configuration. The engine is a compact 700kb that takes only a few seconds to download on most connections.

Power and precision timing. The Inquisit 3 Web engine has exactly the same power, flexibility, and timing precision as the Inquisit 3 Desktop engine. How is that possible? Because the web engine uses exactly the same highly efficient C++ code that runs the desktop engine. We’ve simply packaged that same engine into several different wrapping technologies that make it easy to run over the web.

Compatible with Inquisit 3 Desktop. Your Inquisit 3 scripts will run interchangeably between the desktop and web engines. There is no need to maintain and test multiple versions of your scripts.

Web hosting of scripts and data. Each web license entitles you to host your experiments on our web servers so you can focus on your research and let us worry about programming and administering the web server. If you'd rather use your own web server, no problem, Inquisit 3 Web Edition can be configured to run from any web server.

How do I set up a web experiment?

Setting up a web experiment is simple. The first step is to create an Inquisit script that tells Inquisit how your questionnaire or experiment should run, including instructions and stimuli that should be presented, how participants should respond, which data are recorded, etc. The easiest way to write a script is to use Inquisit 3 Desktop Edition, which comes with a number of handy tools for editing, testing, and debugging experiments.

Once you've gotten the experiment running as it should, it's time to publish it to the web. When you purchase a web license, you will be given a userid and password that gives you access to a set of online tools for administering your experiments and downloading your data. To start, our script wizard walks you through the process of uploading all of the files for your experiment, including images, sounds, video, flash animations, and html pages. You can also select the method for assigning subject ids, including randomly or sequentially generated numbers, values provided by the participant, or values passed by other web pages. You can also specify the text that appears on the web page that launches the experiment. When you are finished, you will have a web page on our site with a link for that starts your experiment. This is the page where you will direct your participants.

If you want to host the experiment on your own site, you simply need to register the url where the script is located. You can then program your own launch page using our example pages as a starting point.

As your participants complete the experiment, the data are posted using SSL encryption back to our web site. A separate file is generated for each participant. Once you login to our site, you can view the available data files and download them individually or merged together as a single file.

Once an experiment is complete, you can remove the previous script and publish your next web experiment.

What are the machine requirements for Inquisit 3 Web Edition?

The client must have a working Internet connection.

The client must be running either Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher, Firefox 1.5 or higher, or Netcape 8.1 or higher.

The client must be running Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, or 2003, or Vista. IWE will not run on Windows 95 or NT4 (actually, it might, but we no longer test these versions of Windows so they are not officially supported). It will not run on any non-Windows operating systems. Sorry, we do not yet support Mac or Linux.

To participate in an Inquisit experiment, the user must either be logged into the computer with Adminstrative privileges, or the computer must have the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 installed. If neither of these conditions apply, the client will not be able to run the experiment.
