No, installation of the Web Player is required. That's for largely technical reasons: to perform accurate stimulus and response timing in the millisecond range, optimized compiled code works best; the web player is the "engine" that's responsible for that, and the code responsible for executing scripts is identical in Inquisit Lab and Web -- so, with the web playier installed, all measurements etc. are performed locally on the participant's device, effectively as if they were running Inquisit Lab. Only when data collection has been completed are the data transferred back to the server.
