How to copy offline data from the Inquisit Web Player App

By default, when experiments are run with Inquisit Web, data from each device is automatically uploaded to your account on Millisecond, where you can login and download it at any time. This is a basic requirement for conducting remote research with participants over the Internet.

When Inquisit Web is used to collect sensitive data on researcher-controlled devices, however, it may be preferrable from a security standpoint to export data directly to services controlled by the research institution rather than have them leave the institution's systems. This article demonstrates how to prevent data from being uploaded to Millisecond and how to retrieve data directly from the Inquisit Player App.

Note that Inquisit Web uses the device's general 'sharing' functionality to export data from it, the same mechanism that is used to share photos, articles, and links. This requires that you have a suitable file sharing application installed on the device to receive the files. For example, you can share the files with your email app, in which case they are sent to an address of your choosing as attachments. You can also share to HIPAA compliant storage apps such as Dropbox, OneDrive, or G Suite. On desktop computers, the 'sharing' will store the files in specific folders on the local machine.

1. Setup Stage: Untoggle the automatic upload setting during the setup stage of your project

By default, 'Automatic Data Upload' is on and needs to be specifically turned off for each individual project. You can find this setting on the 'Options' page during the setup stage.

Once toggled off, each Inquisit Player that will run this specific project will not automatically upload the data.

2. Data Upload Phase

To upload or share the collected data files, you need to manually check each device that was used to run your project.

a) Open the Inquisit Player App on the device and go to the Data tab.

The collected data files will be listed under the Data tab.

b) Share Data with another App.

Select the data files you want to share and press the SHARE button on the Data tab (Be careful to avoid the cloud-like button next to it!). You can then select an app to receive the data files. On desktop computers, you can 'share' the data files with any folders on the local machine. Note that files will not be deleted from the device.

Shared Data

After sharing, you may want to delete the data files from the device. Select each data file that you want to delete, and select the EDIT button (the little pencil).

Once the Edit button is selected, a 'delete' button appears. Press it to delete the selected files.

c) Manual Upload to your Millisecond Account

You can also select the UPLOUD cloud button. Pressing the Upload button will automatically upload the data files to your Millisecond account on the Millisecond server. Once the upload processes is started, you cannot interrupt it, so it's important you don't accidentally press it. Once uploaded, the files will be deleted from the device.
