Psychology of Addictive Behaviors 10, 81-89. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ OVERVIEW ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SOCRATES (version 8) is a self-report measure consisting of 19 5-point Likert Scale questions designed to assess readiness for change in alcohol abusers. The instrument provides three subscale scale scores: Recognition (Re), Ambivalence (Am), and Taking Steps (Ts). SOCRATES is a public domain instrument. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ DURATION ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ the default set-up of the script takes appr. 3 minute to complete __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ DATA FILE INFORMATION ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The default data stored in the data files are: (1) Raw data file: 'socrates_v8.iqdat' date, time: date and time script was run with the current group/subjectnumber subject, group, session: with the current subject/groupnumber/session id build: the Inquisit build q*_response: response given (in assigned values) Scale: 1 (almost never) - 4 (almost always) R: reversed coded questions (if any) q*_latency: how much time (in ms) the participant spent on the surveypage with this particular question (the last time this particular surveypage was visited) (2) Summary data file: 'socrates_v8_summary*.iqdat' (a separate file for each participant) inquisit.version: Inquisit version run computer.platform: the platform the script was run on (win/mac/ios/android) startDate: date script was run startTime: time script was started subjectid: assigned subject id number groupid: assigned group id number sessionid: assigned session id number elapsedTime: time it took to run script (in ms); measured from onset to offset of script completed: 0 = script was not completed (prematurely aborted); 1 = script was completed (all conditions run) socrates_RE: Recognition subscale: q1_Re,q3_Re,q7_Re,q10_Re,q12_Re,q15_Re,q17_Re (Range:7-35) The higher the score, the higher Recognition that there is a problem with alcohol socrates_AM: Ambivalence subscale:q2_Am,q6_Am,q11_Am,q16_Am (Range: 4-20) The higher the score, the higher Ambivalence/Uncertainty towards drinking. High scores show some openess to recognition (Note: should be interpreted in light of recognition score) socrates_TS: Taking Steps subscale: q4_Ts,q5_Ts,q8_Ts,q9_Ts,q13_Ts,q14_Ts,q18_Ts,q19_Ts (Range: 8-40) The higher the score, the more steps participant reports to have taken to to deal with drinking problems. socrates_total: sum of all subscores (Range: 19-95)
