FREE for use with an Inquisit Lab or Inquisit Web license. Background
The Santa Barbara Sense of Direction Scale (SBSOD) is a standardized self-report assessment tool of environmental spatial abilities. It was introduced by Mary Hegarty and colleagues in 2002. The SBSOD evaluates an individual's subjective judgment of their own navigational and orientation skills.
Task Procedure
Participants are asked to rate their spatial navigational abilities on a 7-point scale for 15 questions.
What it Measures
The Santa Barbara Sense of Direction Scale (SBSOD) is a standardized self-report assessment tool of environmental spatial abilities.
Psychological domains
- Spatial Reasoning: Active manipulation of visual and spatial information
Main Performance Metrics
- Total: Sum of all question scores (higher rating indicates subjective higher environmental spatial abilities)
Psychiatric Conditions
The SBST can be used as research as well as a diagnostic tool of spatial abilities. The following patient groups, e.g., report impaired SBSOD scores:
- Developmental Topographical Disorientation (DTD)
- Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia
Available Test Variations
A questionnaire on spatial and navigational abilities, preferences, and experiences designed by Hegarty et al (2002).
