Background

This script implements the Transgender Affect Misattribution Procedure (Transgender AMP) by Kanamori et al (2020), The Transgender AMP is a priming procedure using supraliminal primes to assess implicit attitudes towards transgender. The rationale of the AMP (Payne et al, 2005) is that people, despite instructions to the contrary, cannot ignore (supraliminal) primes and will automatically attribute the attitudes they have towards the prime (category) to stimuli presented after.

Duration

5 minutes

Description

Participants see brief flashes of English words followed by Chinese characters and are asked to judge the pleasantness of each Chinese character on 4-point Likert scale.

Procedure

• 1 Demo Trial (with prime and target not used during test)
• 10 Test blocks of 10 trials randomly selecting from primeA (transgender words)/primeB (neutral words)
( the 100 test trials are run by one block but a blockcounter keeps track of the blocks.
Prime Stimuli are reset after each of these blocks, so each prime is run 10 times)
• all 100 targets are run once in random order

Trials:
• prime is presented for 100ms
• prime is replaced by a blank stimulus for 100ms
• the target is presented for 100ms and then covered up by a mask until response is made
• no iti

Stimuli

see section Editable Stimuli; all stimuli are presented white on black

- 10 prime words from Kanamori et al (2020)
- 1 demo work provided by Millisecond
- 100 Chinese characters (+ 1 demo image) taken from Inquisit AMP.iqjs script (colors reversed)

Instructions

Instructions modeled after Kanamori et al (2020) with some edits
